|Address||Tir Ciw Cantref, LD3 8LL Brecon, United Kingdom|
Cradled in breathtaking scenery with spectacular views of the Beacons to the south and the Black mountains to the east, surrounded by farmland within the National Park, Tir Cue was stone built over 250 years ago and further developed during the napoleonic wars, responding to the high demand for wool used in military uniforms, and meat for soldiers. 'Tir' means 'Place' and 'Ciw' is a shoe for cattle, hence Tir Ciw, or Tir Cue, was where the protective cowshoe was fitted before the harsh trek to the docks of Cardiff and beyond.
The farm appears on the first ordnance survey conducted in 1806, and records go back to when Thomas Evans was born in there in 1761 - His descendants lived here until 1958, when it was abandoned.
Just as the drovers guided thier livestock 200 years ago, you can still follow the Roman track that leads from Tir Cue, between meadows of wild flowers and woodland full of birdlife, to the open space of the park from whence you can opt for an heroic trek to the peaks of the Central Beacons and be there in a couple of hours, or take a gentler, less traveled walk along the valley bottom following the mountain streams through grassland and woodland to waterfalls that make perfect picnic beauty spots.
Though remote, Tir Cue is easy to get to, an hours drive from the Severn Bridge, via Chepstow, Usk and Abergavenny. 35 miles from the M4 motorway at Cardiff, via Merthyr Tydfil, about the same from Newport, via Abergavenny, with motorways and dual carriage roads reaching to within 20 miles, it's any easy 3.5 hour drive from London.
